Time Management Tips for Mothers Who Work at Home

By: Andrew John

Staying home with children while still bringing money home is one of the most common dreams of mothers. Small wonder that more and more of them choose to work at home instead of in an office. This makes being a mother and an employee at the same time much easier. However, in order to work efficiently, you have to organize your time very well if you are to be a good mother and a good employee.

Your Work Schedule

First of all, create a daily schedule. As a mother and a businesswoman at the same time, you will have at least dozen tasks to do every day. Trying to keep everything in your mind, not forgetting about anything and juggling the tasks to keep them in the best order can wear off even the strongest mind. You have to write everything down every day and tick off every task once completed. A tip for creating such schedule: try to work mostly at those times when your children are at school. This way you can spend more time with them - you finish work before they come back and can take care of them.

First, make sure that your children know your schedule and that they are aware that sometimes you're not available for them even though you are at home. If your children know that they should leave you alone when you're working, it will be much easier to run a company. You can also minimize time required for keep the house in good shape by assigning as much work as you can to your children. Your role would be to help and supervise, not to do everything all by yourself. Make sure your children get used to it - it will reduce time needed for the household issues and allows you to spend more time at work.

Tip #2: Multitask

The one thing you should learn while working at home is multitasking. Never allow spending too much time at work - if you can minimize it, do it! If only you can both work and do something else, use this opportunity.

Here are a few examples of what you can do in order to minimize time needed to complete all your tasks. For example, you can do most household jobs while on the phone. Another thing is allowing your kids into your office along with a box of toys. This will minimize time needed to supervise them. Finally, a good idea is to create a list of errands - when you leave home to do something, you can just do everything on the list, right?

If possible use timer. This is the only way of keeping you from overworking. End work and "get home" as soon as your working hours are over. Schedule anything you have left to do for tomorrow. You need to relax a bit, too - one can't work all the time unless one wants to risk burning out.
