Producing box shots and ebook covers has never been easier.

By: Mathew Petrenko

Merchandizing specialists realized a long time ago that packages matter. If you want to sell your books or software items, pack them up. As the good is virtual, so is the package. There are three possible methods to create a virtual cover:

- Requesting it from somebody

- Drawing it yourself in Photoshop

- Employing some dedicated software

The first option appears to be pretty simple. Nevertheless, excellent designers ask for big money. Every software or e-book cover will round up to $150. Using Photoshop is okay as long as you know how to make the program do what you want from it. Sure, the task will require obtaining some action scripts that may raise your expenses by another Benjamin. Do not forget the value of Photoshop: it will cost you over $600. A more straightforward third solution is to get yourself some boxshot software. It is comforting to learn that the supply of such products is competitive with the price range of $15-100. There is clearly plenty room for your taste. Actually, you may come across 3 sorts of such solutions:

- Ready made templates that give no freedom

- 3D with polygonal rendering

- Sophisticated 3D ray tracing soft

Going with the first option, you make sure that boxshots and e-book covers will be fine, but there will obviously be certain limitations. You will not be able to rotate or scale the software box or ebook cover. The second choice provides you with more freedom, but the simplified model produces unnatural shadows. You will not require a specialist to notice that the images look fake. Choosing 3D ray tracing will help you avoid such troubles. For every pixel the software calculates millions of rays, models reflections, glitter and other fx stuff. The resulting image will look cool. The third kind is most appropriate if you want to get some flexibility in developing your boxshot software. A wonderful instance of such a program is Box Shot 3D. At 40 euros the solution is extremely affordable. It lets you create box shots, ebook covers, covers for CD/DVD boxes, member cards and what not. There are a couple of images underneath of ebook covers and software boxes. It will take you quite a bit of work to achieve equal level of graphic detail in Photoshop unless you have some additional scripts. You will not come across lots of solutions that can deliver a similar result. You will take advantage of many adjustable properties, for instance changing the intensity of light and reflections, and optimizing all other visual elements. If you are thinking about making a software box or an e-book cover, go for Box Shot 3D. It will give your product a nice packaging. Attract the prospect with fancy looks. I am sure that Box Shot 3D is the right solution for you.
